FAQs

My office at Danish Buildings in Hull city centre

UPDATE: I am not currently taking on new clients until further notice. Please keep an eye on my website and social media pages for the latest updates on my availability. Thank you.

  • Each client’s experience of therapy will be different, and every therapist’s way of working will be slightly different; that’s okay.

The thing that every single person who comes for therapy has in common is that they want something to change.

My job isn’t to “fix” you because you aren’t broken. Instead, I will work with you to identify patterns of thoughts and behaviours that are no longer serving you, and help you to establish new, healthier ones.

Therapy can be challenging and uncomfortable at times, but sticking with it can be life-changing. If you want to make positive changes and think I might be the therapist for you, you can contact me here.

  • Sessions are available as follows:

    Mondays - 13.30-17.30

    Tuesdays - 8.00-17.30

    Wednesdays - 8.00-17.30

    Thursdays - 8.00-17.30

    Fridays - no availability

Please note that the times indicated are the earliest and latest start times for sessions. Sessions are not available outside these days and times.

  • I charge £75.00 per 1 hour session for individual clients, and £110.00 per 1.5 hour session for couples. I offer all prospective clients a free 30 minute consultation prior to agreeing to work together.

This is for me to get a sense of you and your needs, and to establish if I am the right therapist for you. If you’d like to book a consultation, you can do so here.

  • Yes, I offer online sessions (Zoom or telephone call) in addition to face-to-face sessions from my office in Hull city centre.

  • This is a difficult question to give any kind of definitive answer to, I’m afraid! As I offer therapy privately, i.e. my service isn’t linked to the NHS, there isn’t a “fixed” number of sessions that all clients will have.

When we have an initial consultation and I have a better understanding of the issues you’d like support with, I can give you an idea of how many sessions we might need that’s tailored to you.

Generally, I would suggest at least 6 sessions so that we can get to know each other and hopefully address some of the key issues, but some clients feel that they only need a couple of sessions, while others feel that they would benefit from longer-term support.

You may find this blog post helpful when considering how many sessions you may need.

  • Yes, I’ve put together a document that lists mental health resources and contact information for specialist services in Hull & East Yorkshire, and the UK. You can download it as a free PDF here and it will be reviewed and updated regularly, so please do let me know if you come across anything that would be useful to add in.

*Disclaimer: This resource is for information purposes only and is not necessarily an endorsement of the provider. Please note that this list is not exhaustive, and will be reviewed regularly to ensure that the information included here is accurate and up-to-date.

  • I certainly do! You can find out more about the additional services I offer and whether they might be right for you here.

  • If your course is being delivered through an organisation that’s registered with UKCP, yes, you would definitely be able to count any therapy hours with me towards your qualification requirements. I’m accredited as a psychotherapist with UKCP (level 7), but I would encourage you to speak to your training provider if they are not registered with UKCP to confirm if you would be able to count the therapy hours you intend to have with me.

  • No, I only work with adults (18+), but I can provide information for services and therapists who specialise in working with children and young people in the Hull area and online.

  • There is some on-street parking along Scale Lane, Liberty Lane, and Market Place, all of which are a 2-3 minute walk from my office. Parking for up to 2 hours is £3.50 (free after 6pm), and the meters only take change. You can pay for parking using a credit or debit card by following the instructions for MiPermit, details of which can be found in an orange and white sticker on each meter. This will incur an extra service charge.

The Fruit Market Car Park on High Street is a pay-and-display car park that charges £1.00 per hour (charges apply all day, every day). You can pay with cash or contactless.

King William House is the closest multi-storey car park, and can be accessed from Market Place (postcode is HU1 1RS if you’re using a sat-nav). Parking for up to 2 hours is £3.00, and meters are available on each level (they only accept card payments).

Free on-street parking for up to 3 hours is available around the Fruit Market, which is a 10 minute walk from my office (postcode is HU1 1TB if you’re using a sat-nav).

  • Hull Paragon Interchange is a 15 minute walk from my office, which is home to the city’s bus, coach and railway stations. You can take the Stagecoach 20 bus from Hull Truck Theatre on Ferensway to Liberty Lane, which is a 2-3 minute walk from my office and the timetable is here.

There is also a taxi rank at the front of the Interchange (Ferensway entrance), but taxis from here can’t be booked in advance, so may be more expensive than booking a taxi in advance with a local company.

  • When you contact me, your message may be picked up by my Business Support Manager Lisa and she will respond to you directly on my behalf. She’s professional, experienced and warm and will usually be able to respond within 48 hours.

Once we are working together, your appointments may be organised by her or I might book in the next appointment during the last few minutes of a session.

Lisa usually sends out email confirmations for sessions in the following week on Friday mornings. If your session is on Zoom, she will include a link to the call, payment information, and the date and time.

If you need to book, cancel or reschedule a session, you can contact Lisa directly via email to lisa@emmapooleytherapy.com.

  • If you have a question that hasn’t been answered here, please feel free to contact me using the form below, and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
